Methyl iodide

Iodomethane is a colorless and transparent liquid. It is a monoiodine-substituted product of methane, slightly soluble in water, soluble in ethanol and ether, and miscible with common organic solvents. When exposed to sunlight, it decomposes to release elemental iodine and turns purple. It can be removed by adding metallic copper. Methyl iodide is a commonly used methylating reagent in organic synthesis. It is commonly used in medicine, serving as a preservative and disinfectant, and can also be used as an oxidant.
