Iodine

Iodine is a purple-black, metallic lustrous flaky crystal. It is insoluble in water but readily soluble in ethanol, ether, chloroform, carbon disulfide, benzene and other organic solvents as well as iodide solutions of alkali metals. Iodine is oxidizing and can act as an oxidizing agent in some reactions. Iodine can also be used as an analytical reagent, catalyst, disinfectant, and for the preparation of iodines and iodides.
